Sxip Shirey and Rachelle Garniez are both known indivually for their unique take on song and sound. Recently they were asked to collaborate for the first time for a performance series at MoMA curated by Olivier Conan of BARBES. This resulted in a 45-minute piece of sonic sculpture and song that utilized reversed disc music boxes, roller chimes, prepared guitar, claviaola, voice, toy pianos, egg beaters, ratchet, boxing match desk bell, and other devices. The piece is called Shadow Land. On October 27th as part of Frank Oteri's (American Music Center) Schizoid Music series, Shirey and Garniez will present a full performance of Shadow Land for the first set and then a back and forth presentation of their individual compositions and song for the second set. The evening considers the way fully developed artists come together to create something new and the contexts where the tradition of song and innovative music can meet. It then considers what these artists are like outside the context of the collaboration. Composer, story-teller, curator, and real-life circus performer, Sxip Shirey has toured opening for the Dresden Dolls, peformed at TED in Monterey California, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, the Rothbury music festival and at Bonnoroo with the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus.
